WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME

Memorial. Memory. Remember. Do we remember? Memorial Day is more than just a day to miss school, a day to have a picnic, or to watch a softball game. Memorial Day is about remembering those who risked, and perhaps lost, their lives to protect the freedom and liberty of our country. It’s about looking back at the times when America was in its darkest hours, and remembering the people who helped us out of that doom, to become that great, powerful country that America is proud to call itself today. It’s about looking at the millions of heroes that pushed aside their differences, race, religion, physical ability, and cultural background to form the great armies, navies, air force, and marines that have protected this nation. It’s about the men, women, daughters, sons, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, who left their families to serve their country.  It’s about loss. Loss of lives. So many cemeteries hold the bodies of faithful men and women who fought for what is right. Memorial Day is a time to mourn for these losses. But then, after the mourning, Memorial Day is about unity. About people who come together with nothing in common but a love for their nation. Memorial Day is about taking time out of our, FREE, everyday lives, to look at why we are free. To look at those who put themselves in harm’s way to get us this far. To make us free.  That’s what Memorial Day means to me. Loss. Unity. Freedom. Will you take time to remember?
